Join us on a guided town walk of Puerto Madryn, founded in 1865 by a group of 150 Welsh immigrants to preserve the Welsh language and culture. On our walk, we’ll see the Monument to the Welsh Settlers. Then stroll through the original settlement’s grid of streets, learn about the early history of Puerto Madryn, and visit the Provincial Museum of Natural History and Oceanography.

Wildlife and white sands

Just a short distance from Stanley lies Gypsy Cove, a protected bay known for its striking coastline, white-sand beach, and thriving Magellanic Penguin colony.

A gentle walk along the coastline offers sweeping views and opportunities to spot local wildlife, from Upland Geese to herons and Oyster Catchers. You’ll also pass remnants of WWII coastal defences, a reminder of the Falklands’ strategic past. This relaxed excursion blends nature and history, offering the chance to explore one of Stanley’s most scenic and wildlife-rich areas.

We invite our guests to participate in science activities, developing a greater understanding of the region in which they travel, becoming true ambassadors, and returning home to champion the protection of our planet's most fragile ecosystems.

1. Seabird Distribution with the Antarctic Site Inventory — Surveys throughout the Antarctic Peninsula help scientists understand how seabirds are using different habitats and provide valuable information about their life cycles.

2. Cloud Observations with the Globe Program — By observing and recording cloud cover timed to NASA satellite fly-overs, guests can help scientists understand how surface and air temperature are affected by cloud cover, and how clouds will respond to a changing climate.

3. Happywhale — We assist in tracking individual whales throughout our world’s oceans by harnessing the power of whale watching enthusiasts - our guests - expanding our scientific knowledge of their behaviour and distribution.

4. Sea Leopard Project — A non-profit study aimed at a better understanding of the behaviour, ecology, and population dynamics of leopard seals on the Antarctic Peninsula to promote their conservation and safe human-seal interactions.

5. Fjord Phyto — Study phytoplankton to better understand how they respond to water temperature changes in the polar regions, providing a key to help mitigate future environmental impacts.

Small, beautiful Stanley 

Your tour begins along Ross Road, the capital’s seaside main street.

Your guide will point out the town’s highlights, including Christ Church Cathedral and the Whalebone Arch, the 1982 Liberation Memorial, the Lady Elizabeth shipwreck, and some of Stanley’s original houses. You’ll gain insight into the way of life and heritage in these rugged islands, and you can look out for local wildlife like the Upland Goose and the Falkland Steamer Duck.

The tour ends at the Historic Dockyard Museum, or you can be dropped off at the Jetty Visitor Centre.

• Included: Free entry to Nutt Cartmell Cottage and a tour pack, including a map, stamped postcard, museum leaflet and a hot beverage voucher redeemable at the Teaberry Café or the Waterfront Kitchen Cafe.

Waters rich in life 

Your boat trip begins by heading along the coast of Golfo Nuevo to seek out the local dolphins as they frolic in their natural habitat. We pass by Punta Cuevas where you’ll see the Monumento al Indio Tehuelche and the renowned Ecocentro from the sea, before continuing to the shipwreck, El Folias, in Playa Paraná.

Then we’ll visit the Punta Loma Reserve to see the sea lion colony and some of the many seabirds that breed there, such as cormorants and shearwaters.

Patagonian life 

From Puerto Madryn, your coach heads towards Punta Loma Reserve where you’ll have the opportunity to observe the sea lion colony.  Young sea lions can be seen year-round, and from April onwards, you may see those that migrate from Puerto Piramides.

Your tour continues to Estancia San Guillermo, a typical Patagonian ranch, where you’ll learn about regional flora and watch a sheep shearing demonstration. You’ll enjoy a delicious traditional BBQ lunch with refreshments before heading back on the coach.

Patagonian paradise

This full-day tour immerses you in the natural beauty of the Valdes Peninsula, just 11 miles from Puerto Madryn.

As you arrive at the reserve, you’ll have time to admire the flora and fauna exhibit at the Visitors Centre, before your adventure continues to Estancia San Lorenzo, nestled on the peninsula’s northeastern tip. Here, you’ll encounter the renowned colony of over 200,000 Magellanic Penguins. A strategically placed bench offers the perfect vantage point to soak in this vibrant coastal ecosystem and the sweeping beach views.

Off-road adventure 

Depart Stanley by 4x4 and venture off the beaten track to remote Seal Bay, hosted by the Gilding family, who’ve called this corner of the Falklands home for over two decades.

Journey through rugged terrain, meet rare Rockhopper and Macaroni Penguins, and drive through shimmering Swan Pond. Then enjoy a light lunch on a deserted white-sand beach where Gentoo and Magellanic Penguins roam. You may even spot the odd King Penguin or sea lion. This is an intimate, off-road adventure brimming with wildlife spotting opportunities.

Leave the town behind and hike through Falklands high ground, summiting Mount William and Mount Tumbledown with your expert guide.   As you climb, panoramic views unfold over Stanley, Port William and the windswept ridges that once shaped the 1982 conflict. This is an active, off-the-beaten-path experience that offers both natural beauty and historical depth. Bring binoculars, a camera and dress for the elements – the scenery makes every step worthwhile.

A penguin encounter

Join your local guide at the Jetty Visitor Centre and transfer by minibus to nearby Newan’s Station. Here, 4x4 vehicles will take you off-road across open Falklands terrain to a secluded Gentoo Penguin colony. Along the way, your driver will share insight into local life and the landscape.

With around 200 breeding pairs, the site offers a rare opportunity to see the penguins up close against a dramatic natural backdrop. Enjoy watching these captivating birds in their natural surroundings.

A piece of paradise

This excursion begins with a scenic 90-minute drive as your guide shares insights into local life and the island’s history.

Your destination is Bertha’s Beach, a sweeping stretch of white sand edged by windswept ponds and coastal grassland. Enjoy some free time and explore at your own pace. Gentoo penguins nest nearby, dolphins ride the surf, and endemic birds and plants thrive in this remote and strikingly beautiful corner of the Falklands.

On this experience, you’ll journey from Stanley to Fitzroy as your guide shares the roots of Falklands farming.

At the heart of the farm, your first stop is the shearing shed. Watch sheepdogs at work, then step inside for a live shearing and wool-handling demonstration. Afterwards, enjoy a traditional ‘Smoko’ at the Settlement Hall, with locals on hand to share stories of island life. Flora and fauna discovery 

A short transfer brings you to Whalebone Cove where your nature walk begins.

The 3.5-mile hike takes you through the island’s rugged landscape. Your expert guide will share insight into Falkland life and culture, and help you identify key flora and fauna, which you can mark on a handy illustrated checklist. Look out for species such as Falkland Thrushes, Upland and Kelp Geese, Long-tailed Meadowlarks, Falkland Steamer Ducks and Magellanic Penguins, as well as various endemic ferns, shrubs and grasses.

• Included: Flora and fauna checklist and a bottle of water. To reduce plastic waste, guests are encouraged to bring their own refillable water bottle.

Just us and nature at its purest 

After a pre-camp briefing and dinner onboard, we’ll head ashore to set up camp. Depending on the landing site, we may take walks to nearby viewpoints. Engage in conversations with the Expedition Team or simply slide into your cosy bivvy bag and enjoy the stillness.

The next morning, after packing up, we’ll enjoy a special breakfast back on board the ship as we reflect on the unique experience we’ve just shared.

Please note that while we aim to offer this activity on every voyage, its operation is subject to snow, ice and weather conditions, which may result in changes or cancellations.

Practical information

This is an optional add-on activity which comes at an additional cost.  

The activity can only be booked onboard. 

• Included: Antarctic standard camping gear (bivvy bag, foam mat, inflatable sleeping mat, sleeping bag, sleeping bag liner, head torch). Portable toilet for emergency use, emergency camping food, special onboard breakfast, and completion certificate.

• Remarks/requirements: Guests must complete the pre-camp briefing and sign a waiver. We encourage guests to adhere to IAATO regulations. Bringing food ashore is not permitted, and nothing must be left behind.

• Walking or Activity information: Involves physical activity on snowy terrain - the surface at the camp site is relatively level, and terrain getting there can be varied uphill/downhill. Short hikes also available if conditions allow.
