Direction: Southbound

Disembarkation port: Svolvær

Embarkation port: Svolvær

Time: 18:30-20:00  (one hour at the rib)

Meal: None

Season: Spring, Summer (1 Apr - 8 Sep)

After this stop, the RIB travel across the fjord to Skrova. Abundant fishing and whaling meant that several thousand people lived on the island. Now there are only around 200 inhabitants in the small island community, but there is still an active industry.

On the way back to the Havila Voyages ship by RIB, you also get a closer look at the "Fiskerkona" statue at the entrance to Svolvær.

$112

A Walk in the Tracks of the Medieval Town of Vagar

Discover the Arctic winter night while learning about the medeval town of Vagar,  the people of Lofoten who lived off the sea, and the history of the codfish, "skrei". The guide will meet you at the quay and accompany you on a short bus ride to Kabelvåg. There, you will be handed a headlight and a couple of staves before setting out on a relatively easy going tour, partly through the terrain. Wear good shoes, and windproof trousers and jacket. In the winter season, snowshoes are used depending on the snow conditions.

Embarkation port: Svolvær

Time: 18:30 - 20:30

Season: Autumn, Winter, Spring (10 Sep - 15 Apr)

Min/max persons: 8 - 50

The town of Vagar is often mentioned in written materials from medieval ages, such as sagas and other documents. It is most likely because the  king and archbishop of the time needed to be in control of the important fishery. If it weren't for the presence of the authorities, little would have been written about the daily life among the people of Vagar.

The people of Lofoten have been fishing skrei (a codfish) since medieval times, and even back then, people from far and wide came to participate in the lucrative, but dangerous work in the hope of bringing dried fish (salt cod) home. Vágar was the town in which the fishermen sold some of their catch to merchants traveling from the cities of the south.

During your walk in the cultural landscape in Storvågan – which once held the biggest medieval settlement north of Trondheim – you will learn the history of the skrei, about the medieval town of Vágar, and about the people who lived off the sea.

Step into an authentic rorbu (seasonal house used by fishermen) from 1910 to get a deeper understanding of what was required from the fishermen of Lofoten back in the days.

Season: Spring, summer (23 Mar - 30 Sep)

Min/max persons: 20 - 48

The white-tailed sea eagle has a wingspan of almost 2.5 metres and is Northern Europe's largest bird of prey. When this giant with the characteristic "fingers" on the outer wings and the bright yellow, sharp claws sweeps over you, it will remind you of the story of the northern Norwegian three-year-old girl who was taken by sea eagles and carried up to the eagle's nest.

The mighty eagle really suits these surroundings. The Trollfjord itself is both majestic and mighty with pointed peaks and steep mountain sides that are worn smooth by regular winter landslides. You can only get here by boat.

The violence of nature also gives rise to dramatic stories from vibrant communities and displaced clusters of houses. One of them is the story of when smaller, traditional fishing boats fought against the new, steam-driven fishing boats in a battle for cod in what has been named the Trollfjord Battle. Now you make a peaceful mission to the fjord on a boat with a large outdoor area that enables you to get close to eagles and nature.

The bus then takes you into the mountain and the marble mines. Golden marble has been extracted here since the 1930s, creating over 40 kilometres of mining shafts across eleven levels. A highlight of the mine is a 300-meter lake with clean, clear spring water.

You will embark on a safe, stable raft to traverse the underground lake, tasting the spring water that cascades down the mountain sides. The journey is illuminated by colorful lights in the water and chandeliers in the tunnels, creating a magical atmosphere. This trip is also accessible to wheelchair users.

The tour concludes in the main hall, a large mining hall that can accommodate up to 300 people. Here, you can watch a film to learn more about the mining operations. A meal of meat stew will be served, accompanied by the mine's own spring water. Before reboarding the Havila Voyages' ship, there will be time for a short stroll in the town of Molde.

Torghatten has a naturally formed tunnel in the middle of the mountain, 12–15 metres wide, twice as high and 160 metres long.  The hole was formed when the North American and European continental plates collided 600 million years ago, but while science tells us one thing, legends tell us something else.

According to one story, a brute of a troll fired an arrow at a girl who was running away from him. The king in one of the other mountains saw this and threw his hat in between so that the arrow went through the hat. Then the sun rose and as happens in legends, the sunlight turned the trolls to stone, just as it did with the seven sisters who lie like a mountain range close to Sandnessjøen.

On the walk up to Torghatten, you will learn more about this special mountain and the myths that have sprung up around the mountain with the hole.

The Norwegian coastline, offering plenty of space and clean water, creates perfect conditions for salmon growth. Inside the fjords and along the coast, you'll discover large, circular pens where salmon of all sizes swim freely.

Norwegian salmon is exported to over a hundred countries, and globally, nearly 30 million dinner plates feature salmon each year. Now, you have the chance to explore the salmon's natural surroundings, discover its diet, and learn about its life. Knowledgeable guides will accompany you on a tour where you can observe the facility from the fish pens* to the processing area. They will showcase how underwater cameras and a control room with multiple screens contribute to ensuring the well-being of the salmon.

You are also invited to visit the restaurant and exhibition, and, of course, savor this Norwegian delicacy. This experience offers you a thorough understanding of the entire process from beginning to end.

* All salmon farms are mandated by law to rest their facilities for at least two months between each generation of salmon. This period allows for maintenance, cleaning, disease prevention, or the restoration of environmental conditions in the facility. During these periods, there will be no salmon in the pens.

Practical information

  • The full round-trip voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes and back to Bergen takes 12 days.

  • Northbound voyage (Bergen to Kirkenes): 7 days

  • Southbound voyage (Kirkenes to Bergen): 6 days

The Norwegian coastal route includes 34 ports of call, ranging from vibrant cities like Ålesund and Tromsø to remote villages accessible only by sea. While some stops are brief (15–30 minutes), allowing for quick transfers and deliveries, others offer extended visits, providing opportunities for excursions and exploration.

Many ports are visited on both the northbound and southbound journeys, but at different times of the day, ensuring a varied and unique experience in each direction.

Norwegian coastal cruises operate as a working coastal route, serving both travelers and locals. The ships follow a strict, continuous schedule, running day and night to efficiently connect 34 ports along the Norwegian coast.

  • Short stops (15–30 minutes): Many ports serve as quick drop-off points for cargo and passengers, so stops are brief.

  • Longer stops (1–6 hours): Major ports, such as Tromsø, Ålesund, and Kirkenes, allow more time for excursions and sightseeing.

  • 24/7 Operations: The ships sail continuously, with passengers boarding and disembarking at different locations along the route.

Your fare typically includes:

  • Accommodation in your chosen cabin category

  • Full-board meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner)

  • Coastal transport between ports

  • Access to onboard facilities (lounges, observation decks, and libraries)

Excursions, beverages, and premium dining options may require an additional fee.

Full board meals are included in the cruise fare for journeys longer than 5 nights.

à la carte dining experience featuring high-quality, locally sourced Norwegian cuisine. Instead of buffets, guests enjoy multi-course meals with a focus on sustainability and fresh ingredients.

The best time depends on what you want to experience:

  • Winter (November–March): Northern Lights, snowy landscapes.

  • Spring (April–May): Blooming fjords, fewer tourists.

  • Summer (June–August): Midnight Sun, warmest temperatures, best wildlife sightings.

  • Autumn (September–October): Dramatic fall colors, good chances of Northern Lights.

Yes! The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) are visible from late September to March, especially above the Arctic Circle. Some cruises even offer a Northern Lights Guarantee, meaning a free voyage if you don’t see them.

If you travel between May and July, you will experience 24-hour daylight above the Arctic Circle. This means longer excursions, stunning sunsets at midnight, and unique photography opportunities.

Yes, Wi-Fi is available but can be slow or intermittent, especially in remote areas.

Unlike traditional cruise ships, Norwegian coastal cruises focus on nature and exploration rather than entertainment. Instead of casinos and shows, you'll find:

  • Lectures and storytelling sessions

  • Cultural and historical presentations

  • Photography and wildlife spotting opportunities

Norwegian coastal waters are generally calm, but some areas (like the open sea crossing near Stad) can be rough. If prone to motion sickness:

  • Choose a midship cabin on a lower deck.

  • Bring motion sickness medication or wristbands.

The onboard currency is Norwegian Krone (NOK), but credit/debit cards are widely accepted. Some ships may offer currency exchange services.

No, the dress code is casual and comfortable. For dinners, smart casual attire is recommended but not required. Warm outdoor clothing is essential for excursions.

No, passengers are not allowed to bring their own alcohol onboard. Drinks can be purchased at the bar and restaurants. Some cruises offer a drinks package.

Temperatures vary depending on the season and how far north you travel:

  • Winter (November–March): Ranges from -5°C to -20°C (23°F to -4°F) in northern Norway, with milder temperatures closer to Bergen.

  • Spring (April–May): Between 0°C and 10°C (32°F to 50°F), with snow still present in the north.

  • Summer (June–August): The warmest time of the year, with temperatures between 10°C and 25°C (50°F to 77°F) in southern regions and around 10°C (50°F) in the Arctic.

  • Autumn (September–October): Mild temperatures between 5°C and 15°C (41°F to 59°F), gradually cooling as winter approaches.

Daylight hours vary dramatically depending on the season and latitude:

  • Winter (November–January): The Arctic experiences Polar Night, with as little as 2–4 hours of twilight per day in the north. Southern Norway has around 5–7 hours of daylight.

  • Spring (February–April): Days lengthen rapidly, with 8–16 hours of daylight, depending on the month.

  • Summer (May–July): The Midnight Sun shines above the Arctic Circle, meaning 24 hours of daylight in the north and very long days further south.

  • Autumn (August–October): Days start getting shorter, with 16 hours of daylight in early autumn and around 6–8 hours by late October.

Packing for a Norwegian coastal cruise depends on the season, as weather and daylight hours vary significantly. The key is layering, as temperatures can change quickly.
