This PONANT itinerary is your chance to embark on an 8-day expedition cruise to Greenland. In Kangerlussuaq, aboard  Le Boréal, you will embark for an unforgettable journey in the heart of the most magnificent Arctic landscapes.

After a first port of call at Sisimiut, Greenland’s second-largest city, a colourful port nestling between undulating hills, the world of ice will open up to you during this cruise along Greenland’s northwestern coast.

You will cross Disko Bay for the first time to reach the edges of the Eqi Glacier, an icy giant with crystalline reflections, and the Paul-Emile Victor research station.

The colourful villages of Uummannaq and Disko Bay encircled by mountains and basalt formations will welcome you next with their majestic icebergs – some of the largest in the Northern Hemisphere. This is the ideal opportunity for meeting the local population and learning about Greenland’s Inuit culture.

You will then set sail west for Qeqertarsuaq, one of just two villages on Disko Island. In the heart of this spectacular and fragile nature, enjoy the breath-taking views of grandiose and varied landscapes.

You will head south to reach Evighedsfjorden, which means the “eternity fjord” in Danish, where the landscapes made up of glaciers, tundra and jagged cliffs will help you end this journey on a high.

During your cruise and zodiac outings, you will have many opportunities to admire an abundant and varied marine fauna with seals and whales, not to mention the many species of seabirds.

Itinerary is subject to change according to port authorizations and government regulations. We are privileged guests in these remote lands where we are at the mercy of weather, ice, tidal and current conditions. Landings on certain sites and the observation of certain wildlife cannot be guaranteed. They vary from day to day, making each PONANT cruise a unique experience. The Captain and the Expedition Leader will make every effort to ensure that your experience is as rich as possible, while complying with the safety rules and instructions imposed by the AECO.

Highlights

Itinerary

Day 1 | Kangerlussuaq Havn

The name Kangerlussuaq means "Big Fjord" in the local Kalaallisut language. The settlement of about 500 people is located in western Greenland on flat land at the head of a fjord with the same name. Kangerlussuaq is the site of Greenland's largest commercial airport and most of the economy here is dependent on the air transportation hub and tourism. The rugged lands around the settlement support terrestrial Arctic fauna including muskoxen, caribou, and Gyrfalcons.

Day 2 | Sisimiut (Holsteinsborg)

Located just north of the Arctic Circle, Sisimiut is the northernmost town in Greenland where the port remains free of ice in the winter. Yet it is also the southernmost town where there is enough snow and ice to drive a dogsled in winter and spring. In Sisimiut, travelling by sled has been the primary means of winter transportation for centuries. In fact, the area has been inhabited for approximately 4,500 years. Modern Sisimiut is the largest business center in the north of Greenland, and is one of the fastest growing Greenlandic cities. Commercial fishing is the lead economy in the town‘s thriving industrial base.

Day 3 | Eqi Glacier

Day 4 | Uummannaq

In the iceberg-laden waters surrounding the remote community of Uummannaq it is common to see whales. This area of Greenland is also known for its huge basalt mountains, and the small hunting and fishing village of Uummannaq rests at the foot of the heart-shaped Uummannaq Mountain, a name that translates to mean “in the shape of a seal’s heart”. The town of over 1200 people has a granite church and the country’s most northerly ferry terminal. The economy of Uummannaq revolves largely around the halibut/fish-processing factory.

Day 5 | Disko Bay

Day 6 | Qeqertarsuaq (Godhavn)

Day 7 | Evighedsfjorden

Day 8 | Kangerlussuaq Havn

The name Kangerlussuaq means "Big Fjord" in the local Kalaallisut language. The settlement of about 500 people is located in western Greenland on flat land at the head of a fjord with the same name. Kangerlussuaq is the site of Greenland's largest commercial airport and most of the economy here is dependent on the air transportation hub and tourism. Ships

le lyrial

Le Lyrial

First introduced in 2015 and the fourth ship in the Sisterships series, Le Lyrial is the very embodiment of this new generation of intimately sized cruise ships. Its exterior and interior lines, all sober understatement and refinement, make it a yacht of a rare and innovative kind.

For the interior decoration, we took inspiration from the tones and colours of our destinations and used a palette made up of blues, from the soft, luminous grey-like tones of the polar ice to the vivid notes and turquoises of Mediterranean inlets and coves.
