Is Sea Kayaking in the Arctic or Antarctica For You?

Sea kayaking is a highly sought-after activity that provides one of the most intimate ways to experience the polar regions, allowing travelers to connect with the environment at water level. You are positioned close to nature, where you can "touch and feel every polar sensation imaginable".

The Experience and Wildlife Encounters

Kayaking offers an immersive and unique perspective of the Arctic and Antarctic. Unlike cruising, this self-powered activity lets you glide silently past spectacular ice formations, towering icebergs, and soaring glacial cliffs. The stillness of the experience is often noted, providing a "fantastic contrast to crunching through the snow on land".

From the seat of a kayak, you get close-up views of the fjords, shorelines, and wildlife. It provides excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing as you might:

Program Structure and Logistics
Expedition operators typically offer sea kayaking as an optional activity on voyages to both the Arctic and Antarctic.

Experience and Fitness Requirements
Expedition operators often offer programs tailored to different skill levels, but the full Sea Kayak Program typically requires previous experience:

Sea Kayak Program (Full Program) - Guests with some sea kayaking experience.

Multiple outings throughout the voyage. Some aim for 4 to 6 excursions per passenger on regular voyages.

Must be able to swim and be comfortable in a sea kayak. Requires stamina for multiple outings.

Paddling Excursion (Discovery Kayaking) - Guests with little or no paddling experience.

Typically a single, one-off outing per voyage.

Requires no experience whatsoever. Guests must be fit enough to enter and exit the kayak from the Zodiac and maneuver the paddle.

For safety, guides may refuse access to a kayak if the guest lacks the necessary experience, particularly for excursions that expose paddlers to potentially rougher weather or water conditions.

Due to limited availability (some programs only have 10 to 20 spots per expedition), it is strongly recommended that the kayaking program is registered for and booked in advance, often at the time of the original trip reservation.

Cruise Norway will be glad to advice you on the best operators for kayaking in the Arctic and Antarctica and pre-book your sea kayaking.
