Why Take a Photo Workshop in the Arctic or Antarctica?

Photo workshops are a popular feature on expedition cruises to the Arctic and Antarctica, designed to help travelers of all skill levels capture professional-quality images of these unique destinations.

The workshops are typically led by expert or professional photographers who are part of the expedition team or are special guest photographers. The instruction is a two-part process, split between time on the vessel and time in the field.

  1. Onboard Activities: This segment involves lectures and presentations. Topics are designed to familiarize you with your personal camera equipment and cover the basics of photography. You will receive insightful tips on camera setup, composition enhancement, and craft refinement. Some voyages also include full schedules of tutorials, inspirational talks, editing sessions, and critique sessions.

  2. In-Field Activities: During excursions, landings, and Zodiac cruises, guide-photographers will provide hands-on coaching and personalized guidance, helping you practice skills in real polar conditions. The focus is on capturing images of the stunning landscapes (icebergs, glaciers) and abundant wildlife (penguins, seals, whales, sea birds). Participants in dedicated programs may have the opportunity to move in smaller groups or disembark as a first group to maximize their chances of capturing the best shots.

Key Features and Benefits

Program Logistics and Requirements

Some operators offer the photography workshop as a free included activity on every expedition. Others offer dedicated programs for a supplemental fee, such as $495 or $995 per person on selected expeditions. It may also be included at no additional cost on "Basecamp" itineraries.

Booking
Pre-booking is generally required, often well in advance, as photographers and spaces are in high demand. Cruise Norway can arrange this on your behalf.

Equipment
You must bring your own camera gear. This can be a basic camera, mirrorless, DSLR, or a trusty phone. Suggested equipment includes wide and telephoto lenses, multiple batteries and memory cards, chargers, cleaning supplies, and a waterproof bag or case to protect your gear.

Prerequisites
For dedicated programs, a basic understanding of camera functionalities (e.g., shutter speed, aperture) may be required.

Dedicated Tours
Many ships have a photographer on the expedition team. However, some voyages are advertised as Photography Special or "Through the Lens" cruises, featuring extra photography guides and focused excursions.

If you would like advice, please contact Cruise Norway and we will send you a few proposals based on your skill level and requirements.
