Swan Hellenic Svalbard cruise aboard the SH Diana

An Arctic Odyssey: Sailing Svalbard Aboard the SH Diana
by Matthew Gray Senior Expedition Advisor at Cruise Norway

Our journey to the pristine Arctic wilderness of Svalbard, a land of raw beauty and powerful contrasts, began with anticipation. This nine-day expedition aboard the small, luxury vessel, the SH Diana by Swan Hellenic, was not just a trip; it was a profound immersion into a frozen world, a sentiment shared by my 8-year-old son, Remy, whose eyes held a constant twinkle of adventure.

The Perfect Prelude: Oslo to Longyearbyen
To account for any potential travel delays, we scheduled a comfortable pre-night stay in Oslo. The vibrant Norwegian capital set the perfect, culture-rich stage for the journey, allowing us to explore its history and visit highlights like the Munch Museum. The next day marked the true beginning of our Arctic quest. A charter flight whisked us from Oslo to Longyearbyen, Svalbard’s largest settlement. As we descended, the rugged Arctic beauty instantly enveloped us: the town's cluster of colorful houses nestled starkly against a backdrop of snow-covered peaks. Our excitement peaked immediately upon leaving the airport when we spotted Svalbard reindeer. A heartwarming reunion with an old friend awaited, allowing us to toast the start of our expedition with a special brew at the northernmost pub in the world—a truly memorable start.

Expedition Life on the SH Diana
Upon boarding the SH Diana, we discovered a vessel designed for both rugged exploration and luxurious comfort. Our Balcony D6 cabin became a cozy retreat, offering a front-row seat to the Arctic spectacle; it was a pure joy to sip coffee on the balcony while watching seals resting on ice floes against a backdrop of majestic mountains.

The expedition days that followed were a relentless parade of breathtaking encounters. Our exploration took us deep into the fjords, where we witnessed the mesmerizing blend of ice and sea. The Zodiac boat excursions were the engine of our adventure, allowing us to get up close and personal with the raw, humbling scale of the glaciers. At one point, as the winds shifted and sea ice gathered, our path back to the ship was nearly blocked, providing Remy with a boundless rush of excitement as the Zodiac zoomed through the gathering floes.

The Wonders of Svalbard: History, Wildlife, and Serenity
Our days were filled with a captivating mix of history, wildlife, and natural wonders:

Onboard Excellence and Farewell

The amenities aboard the SH Diana provided a perfect counterpoint to the frozen world outside. We made full use of the gym, the sauna, and particularly the heated pool and sauna with a direct view of the icy landscape, which was the perfect spot to unwind while surrounded by frozen beauty.

The culinary experiences were a delightful adventure in themselves. The food was a gastronomic journey, with fresh seafood, Arctic delicacies, and international dishes. While Remy was adventurous enough to try reindeer stew and Arctic char, his love for cheese pizza and French fries remained unshaken. As for me, I indulged in daily servings of succulent ribeye steak, cooked to perfection.

A final, unforgettable moment for Remy was his visit to the Captain's Bridge, where the Captain on SH Diana graciously allowed him to sit in the captain's chair and even "steer" the ship out of a fjord—a dream come true for a young adventurer.

As our voyage came to an end, we returned to Oslo with a post-night stay, giving us time to reflect on the incredible journey. Our Svalbard expedition on the SH Diana was a testament to the power of exploration, the wonders of the Arctic, and the enduring memories created while traveling with a curious heart. It's a trip we'll cherish forever, a vivid reminder that the world's most captivating stories are often found in the places less traveled.
