When considering booking a cruise there are two options with different advantages, group space or individual. But what are the differences and why should an individual (or couple) consider group space for their chosen sailing?
Not every sailing date will have group space available, but it's always worth inquiring with your travel advisor as group space can have several distinct advantages. Cruise lines offer group space for passengers or travel agencies willing to commit to a minimum number of guaranteed berths (beds) or cabins sold on a particular sailing date.
There can be a mix of cabin category types (inside/interior, ocean view, balcony) and can be a mix of single or double occupancy per cabin. This minimum threshold varies by cruise line and sailing date.
The block of reserved cabin space may be offered at a reduced price from individual space, but not always. Price alone should not be the determining factor.
One of the main advantages of booking group allocation is in the terms and conditions, which are generally different from individual reservations. Group space still requires a deposit on the cabin (a percentage of the total cost), but often has more lenient cancellation terms.
Passengers booked into group space need not know one another necessarily or have any affinity. If a group is traveling together, such as a family reunion, and meets the minimum number of passengers required, a berth or berths may be included complimentary. This is sometimes referred to as tour leader or group leader space.
It should be noted that group space will not have the option for any current promotional pricing or offers the cruise line presents to individual bookings. Groups may enjoy exclusive perks such as on-board credit, drink packages or cocktail parties, exclusive excursions, or dining options.
It is always worth inquiring about group space availability when considering a cruise departure date. Your travel agent can advise if this is an option. Compare carefully to determine which booking option best fits your budget and travel plans.
